Fallen Angel Stardoll Re-root...

Like many of you, I found that the hair quality on the Fallen Angel Stardoll was not up to my standard. I liked her red streaks, but in order to give her more diversity in character and what she could wear, I omitted them from her new hair.  She was re-rooted using the knot method in black saran.

And wouldn't you believe it...I didn't mess up her original eyelashes! (^_^)

The new and much improved Evangeline...

Hope everyone is doing well!! (^_^)

    1. I agree! There is another doll or 5 I'll be re-rooting in my collection for that very reason. It's up to us to breathe new and better life into these gals. :)

  2. A much better look for her. She's more versitile now. That red streak gave her a limited scenster look.

    1. I agree! And I have enough "scene" type gals in my collection. I didn't need another. :)

    1. lol Thanks Tracy!! (^_^) Saran is VERY shiny hair, and silky too. A lot of the Barbie Basics have Saran hair. The blonde Teresa from the jeans Barbie Basics line has the nicest Saran I've seen on a doll in awhile.

  7. Her hair is beautiful. Gives her a slightly older look (which I like). I'm really here for the fashion show, though. You know I love to see what the styling for your dolls will be.

    1. Thank you. I love that she looks more grown up now. And that is such a huge compliment coming from a Stardoll fashionista such as yourself! :)

  8. Wow, it looks really beautiful, very sleek and stylish and not so feathery!

I wish I knew anything about rerooting... I've been so tempted to try it!!!!

    1. If you are the least bit tempted to try it...do! :) Just make sure your first re-root is a doll you don't care about and make sure it's a soft doll head as opposed to a hard one. lol At least for the first couple of re-roots.
And thank you for the awesome compliment!!

  10. Hi, I'm considering putting a Stardoll head on a Barbie body.
I found your blog and I'm very impressed. Your end result looks great!
I'm curious, what kind of body did you use for this project? Is it a normal Barbie body?

    1. Thank you so much for stopping by my blog Courtney! And thank you for the kind and generous compliment! I used the body from the Barbie Loves Sinatra doll. Here is a link to what she looks like (if you haven't heard of her): http://www.getprice.com.au/images/uploadimg/895/Barbie_Collector_Barbie_Loves_Sinatra.jpg

When you do the head transplant, keep in mind that the Stardoll head has a smaller neck hole, so heating the head in a heating pad would be a good idea to prevent neck splits. (^_^)

Hope that you find this helpful!

    2. Thanks for replying! That really helps me out a lot. =)
The stardoll head I want to use has the perfect face for my project, but I need her to have a Barbie body so she can wear the clothes and shoes I have for her. This is my first ever OOAK Barbie doll project. I've done some research but I haven't started popping off heads, rerooting hair, etc. yet.
What kind of heating pad would you recomend I use?

    3. No problem! (^_^) I'm just happy I was of help. This face is one of my favorites and she is still one of my favorite dolls. First ever? How exciting!! When you are all done will you be posting pictures anywhere? I'd love to see when you have her finished.

As for a heating pad, I use one that has an auto shut off so that it doesn't get too hot. You can also wrap the head in an all white paper towel to further protect the head. Never wrap the head in a decorative or colorful paper towel. The dye can actually transfer to the vinyl. (I made this mistake once, lol.)

    4. I'm actually attempting to do 4 Barbies at once. They are going to be the doll-sized version of one of my favorite music groups. It will be quite some time until they are finshed, but if they turn out well, I plan to post pictures on my deviantart account. I have the heads I need for three of the dolls, so I still need the last head and four additional bodies (After reading your blog, and seeing how awesome your re-bodied dolls are, I decided I want to use pivotal Barbie bodies). I wil be re-rooting and re-bodying all four dolls, as well as making small adjustments to their makeup.
Do you mind if I pick you brain a little more? I was wondering what kind of doll hair you recommend. I've found reviews about different kinds of doll hair, but I was wondering if you had any preferences when it comes to rerooting Barbies. I read your post about dollyhair.com, too, so I plan to avoid shopping with them.
2 of my dolls will have straight hair, so I imagine that will not especially challenging.
However, the third doll will need straight hair that can be curled, as I need to curl the ends of her hair.
The fourth doll will the most challenging, as I need her hair to be crimped all over! -_-
Thank you again for you time, patience, and advice. I really appreicate it!

    5. You certainly sound passionate about your project, and that is such an awesome thing to have going when you undertake such a big task. Four dolls is ambitious and admirable! (^_^) I have often thought of making dolls based on members of bands I love, but I always seem to push them aside. (I'm such a chronic procrastinator.) What is the link to your deviant art account? I hope you acquire the rest of your materials quickly and without any snags. (Did I mention I'm quite excited to see your finished project?)

I do love articulation. My dolls that can't seem to find suitable articulated bodies tend to get tossed into a drawer, or sold. Having the freedom to move them about is so much more fun. (^_^)

      As for picking my brain...
I am a HUGE fan of Saran hair. And it is my go to hair when I want lovely straight hair. Saran will curl, but it is a heavier type of fiber, so sometimes the curl will fall out. But for the gal that just needs her ends done, it shouldn't be a problem as long as you set it really well. I'm going to try a new type of hair called monofiber. It can be ordered from this site: http://retrodollsus.weebly.com/monofiber-silky.html

I haven't received it or worked with it yet, but I can let you know what I think of it when I do. It is suppose to be silky like Saran but curls with a curling iron. It can withstand 400F. Crazy right? The owner of the site says you have to work with it wet because it is quite slippery. So, I will have to see for myself what I think before I recommend it. Otherwise, Nylon hair is a good choice for curls and crimps. However, if you use the needle and knot method (it is the only method I use) then you will need to put a little dab of Dritz brand fray check on the knots and let it dry to hold the hair in a knot. Nylon has a tendency to slip out if it isn't secured. Here is a link on the re-rooting technique I use: http://www.wideeyedgirls.com/rerootinstruction.html

And a fellow blogger friend of mine did this great entry on some of the more common types of hair: http://thehastingsmanor.blogspot.com/2012/03/doll-hair-101-nylon-saran-and-acetate.html

I hope that helps! (^_^) If you ever have more questions don't hesitate to ask.

    6. Thank you so much! That definately helps me. The hair was a big concern of mine...thanks for shedding some light on the subject. =)

I see you've had success rebodying with the Sinatra and Elvis articulated bodies. I'm considering trying them (if the skin tones match well with my doll heads).
What do you know about the Fashionistas bodies? Articulated playline Barbies are pretty cheap and easy to find, but I don't know how well they hold up to rebodying.

I'll be using the heads from Generation Girl Mari, Rio De Janiero Lea, Japan 2008 Barbie, and a Stardoll (the 'goth' with black hair & bangs).
I'm going to try to find articulated bodies that match these skin tones. I'd like the bodies to have different proportions so that my dolls look like their human counterparts, but if that proves to be too challenging, I don't mind using the same body mold (i.e. perhaps Sinatra or Elvis) for each doll.

I've read that Liquitex acrylic paint is what some people use for repaints on Barbies. Have you used Liquitex acrylic, and if so, how well did it work for you?

I'm looking forward to seeing how the monofiber behaves.

Thanks for the links! I read & bookmarked them. Very useful!

The web address for my account is nextrockangel.devianart.com .
I don't log on often, and I haven't posted anything new in months, but I will definately post photos of my finished OOAK Barbie projects (whenever that may be...)
It will be several months (maybe longer) until I am finished, but I'm excited to start. =)

Thank you for answering all my questions and being so thorough! You really have helped me out a lot. I appreciate your interest & support in my project. I hope I will be able to acquire the needed materials soon so I can start the fun stuff =)
I, too am a procrastinator. I have lots of ideas...By nature, I'm a dreamer, and not much of a do-er. I had only one New Year's Resolution this year: to be LESS of a procrastinator! I've had the idea for this particular project for around 2 years, and this year I intend to actually do it. I wanted to make OOAK Barbies for years now, but never had the guts to try it.
Fingers crossed I can get my hands on the bodies and hair I need!
